Why is it needed?

The conditions and demands of modern living have led us to lose the natural good use we were born with. Many of us have developed ways of sitting, standing and moving which, although they may feel comfortable, put unnecessary stress and tension into our bodies. It is common to spend much of our time bent over desks, slumped in chairs, or hurrying from one activity to another, and unfortunately these habits interfere with our balance and functioning, causing strain and distortion, and affecting our ability to function well.

Our natural reflexes for balance and posture depend primarily on the co-ordination of our head, neck and back. Under the right conditions, these postural mechanisms support us easily, without obvious effort, in a way that is neither unduly tensed nor collapsed. However, if we interfere with this subtle relationship, we create strain and imbalance throughout our bodies.

This misuse may lead to specific symptoms - headaches, neck tension, back pain, loss of "concentration", or perhaps a more general sense of lack of vitality and balance in life. Clearly, a lack of physical balance can affect us mentally, and vice versa.
